- Cruise or kayak along the multicolored cliffs and sea caves of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore out of Munising. Boat tours and guided paddles get you close to the formations.
- Hike between the Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls—the Upper Falls are ~200 ft wide and among the largest in the eastern U.S.; the river’s amber “root-beer” color comes from natural tannins.
- Watch 1,000-foot freighters rise and drop at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie; the visitor center is free and right beside the action.
- Ride the self-propelled observation raft over Kitch-iti-kipi (The Big Spring) at Palms Book State Park—Michigan’s largest natural freshwater spring.

- The U.P. is nearly one-third of Michigan’s land but home to about 3% of the population—hello, elbow room.
- Whitefish Point Light is the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior, and the point is part of the “Shipwreck Coast” near the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
- You can often see the Northern Lights here—best chances are August–April, with peaks around April/October/November on clear, dark nights.
- Locals are proudly called “Yoopers” (from “U.P.-er”), and the pasty—a handheld meat-and-veggie pie brought by Cornish miners—is a beloved staple
